Our Story

Lorenzo and Vanessa-0001

VANESSA’s POV

How did you two meet? I met Enzo on the third day of ORSEM 2002 in Ateneo de Manila University. He was a tall and thin guy who always wore bright red or grim black. I thought he had a strong personality — bordering cocky sometimes — but he had a certain warmth about him that I found comforting from the beginning. He became my seat mate in our English block, and soon, an orgmate in the student council. We were teased to no end by our block mates, student council colleagues and sometimes even our English professor (whom we decided to get as one of the Principal Sponsors). I thought none of it back then, as I was with someone else at that time. I never imagined that Enzo would someday be my husband.

When did you first realize you were in love with Enzo? Sometime early September 2006, we were in what one could consider a complicated relationship — we were almost a couple, but we were both holding back. We came from rocky relationships, so we were treading carefully lest we compromise our good friendship. One night, I was about to leave Enzo’s house to attend a friend’s birthday dinner. I greeted him good night, gave him a quick hug and blurted out, “I love you!” IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE! THE HORROR! Though he was just as shocked as I was, his smile was the biggest I’ve ever seen since we first met. Since then, we could not stop saying those three words to each other. By 23 September 2006, he asked me — almost unceremoniously — if I could be his girlfriend.

What’s your favorite memory of Enzo? The most compelling memory I have of him was when we both flew to Tacloban, Leyte for Pope Francis’ visit to Tacloban. It was a stormy day. We had to be seated on our monobloc chairs by 5:00AM even if the program was supposed to start at 8:00AM. While waiting, we would attempt to take naps — seated upright, in the pouring rain and protected only by cheap, plastic rain ponchos. In spite of being drenched straight through sunrise, the Pope’s presence and touching message made the ordeal worth it. But that wasn’t the end of it. Because of the sheer volume of people, service vehicles could not reach the assembly area at the airport for pick-ups; everybody had to walk back to town. We had walked a good 45 minutes along the rural roads of Leyte before we realized we were following the wrong crowd. We had to turn back to correct our route. What should have been a 50-minute walk became almost two hours in the pouring rain. In sheer exhaustion, we were no longer speaking to each other when we finally made it to Robinson’s Place Tacloban and wolfed down our late lunch. Throughout the entire day, Enzo was just patiently walking beside me and did not complain (not even once!) in spite of the inconvenience. I had always known that I could rely on him when the situation became critical. Our Tacloban experience made me believe even more that Enzo is the level-headed man I could count on through good times and bad times. No amount of typhoon or difficulty could break his spirit and composure when it came down to keeping me safe and bringing me back home.

What are you looking forward to with Enzo being your future husband? Enzo and I have already been in a relationship for more than 8 years before we decided to get married. He has seen me at my worst, and he continues to love me nonetheless. Last 06 January 2015, when Enzo proposed under the stars on a nondescript bench at Capitol Commons, our life ahead of us flashed before my eyes. I saw the man who would be the father and role model of my children. I saw the man who would not only be a good provider, but also a loving partner and caring family man. I saw the man who would still crack me up with his dry, sarcastic humor long after wrinkles on our eyes could give away the number of years we’ve shared in laughter and in glee. I saw the man I was prepared to marry and fulfill my destiny with.
